About Us

The Purdue Chapter of the ACLU has a history of struggling prevalence. It has existed in fits and starts, partially due to the very challenging environment a conservative state like Indiana provides. Though the Purdue ACLU is involved in some hands-on activism, our main goal is to educate students and the community of their rights, issues regarding and affecting those rights, and to encourage college students to take an active part in the world, to be aware of their part in it, and to actively yearn to make a difference in it.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Purdue Student Chapter of the ACLU is to raise awareness of civil liberties on the Purdue campus and in the nation as a whole, to ensure that citizens' rights are protected and not violated, and to foster open discussion and activism that will preserve our freedoms.

About the ACLU:
The American Civil Liberties Union is the nation's foremost advocate of individual rights and justice, and leading guardian against unwarranted government interference and abuse. Since 1920, the mission of the ACLU has been to preserve the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights for everyone, regardless of stature, gender, or ethnicity.

Today, the ACLU fights to defend the Constitution for each new generation and to extend constitutional rights to groups that have traditionally been denied them. The ACLU is best known for our litigation efforts; many of our groundbreaking cases have changed lives and made history. We also work for change through public education, community activism, public policy, analysis, and governmental lobbying.

The ACLU is a non-profit, non-partisan, private organization divided into 51 affiliates throughout the nation, with a national office in New York.

Why here at Purdue University?
Injustice is not discriminatory of location. Wherever there has been an infringement of individual rights, not only has injustice been served to an individual, but this also plagues society as a whole. We are all living by the same rules. Purdue University is no exception.
