Issues

Offical ACLU Issues can be found on the ACLU website. For official positions on major concerns, check there. Here are some issues we personally feel strongly about at the Purdue ACLU:

National Security and the Tradeoff with Civil Rights:
Purdue ACLU feels very strongly, as does the national ACLU, that Americans can be both safe and free. This means that we can increase domestic security without giving up the very civil liberties which we hold most valuable. Same-Sex Marriage:
Over the last several months, the battle between Gay Rights and the sanctity of marriage have clashed several times. Conservatives including President Bush have clamored and supported a constitutional amendment which would define marriage strictly as between a man and a woman. Meanwhile, Gay Rights are fighting hard to get the rights they feel that they should have in a loving, committed relationship. Several states have joined the fray, most notably Massachusetts and California. As this issue touches the Constitution in a more direct way than many have before, we feel that it is something important to discuss as students and citizens. ACLU-PSC will be working this semester to bring you a Same-Sex Marriage forum, where advocates from both sides of the issue will be able to put in their thoughts to a discussion on the core of the argument. Keep posted for announcements.

Reproductive Rights:
Abortion. It's a volatile and provocative word almost anywhere you go or anyone you talk to. When does life begin? Is it murder? Does the government have any right to dictate what women do with their bodies? These questions and more abound, and form a controversy in the heart of American culture today.
